Carrington Street

This wonderful project started with a wonderful house – a heritage listed “timber & tin” weatherboard house in Ballina. The house was in good condition and beautifully styled by the owners, but like many houses of this type, lacked ventilation and light.

The brief required a new wing to the house containing an open plan lounge and dining space, laundry and studio, and a master bedroom, ensuite and walk-in robe.

By removing a lean-to to the rear of the house and orientating the new wing to the North, we were able to bring in light and views of the sky and garden. The existing kitchen was re-worked to improve functionality and access to the outdoors, and now features an impressive island bench designed by the clients. The rear deck was extended and is sheltered by the new rooms.

Raked ceilings and a wall of glass give the lounge a sense of scale without having a large floor area and brings both summer breezes and winter sun into the house. Working with engaged and detail driven clients has resulted in a highly resolved addition that enhances the best qualities of this heritage building.

Work is still continuing on the master bedroom suite, and I will upload some more photos when they are available. In the meantime, I am very proud of how this project has turned out.
